Railroad Depot
The railroad depot was at one time the economic heart of small communities across South Dakota. Depots, commonly called train stations, were the point at which visitors, mail, and freight would come and leave towns. Through depots, people were able to stay informed about global events, keep in touch with family across the country and world, and have items shipped in that could not be manufactured locally. Businesses also relied on railroads to bring in products which usually came through the depot.
Unfortunately, we can't exactly fit an entire railroad depot inside our facility. However, we have managed to replicate part of a small town railroad depot inside the museum complete with a waiting room and the depot agent's office! The depot exhibit also features a working telegraph.
