The Rick Mills Memorial Photo Contest is now live!
From June 1st through September 13th, the South Dakota State Railroad Museum is hosting a railfanning photo contest across the state of South Dakota. Railfans and railroad photographers are encouraged to submit entries into the contest for the chance to win some fantastic prizes!
Judging is done in two rounds. The first round will be done through our museum's Facebook page. On Mondays, submissions will be posted to Facebook and shared around. The top three most popular images for each week will then be made into 8x10 photo prints that will be displayed in the museum through the 2026 season. After the museum closes for the season, a panel of judges will be formed to determine the final three overall winners of the contest.
The top three winners of the contest will be given a gift card from B&H Photo and Video.

Submitting a photo is easy! First, fill out the submission form and be as descriptive as possible. Next, attach the form and a JPG, TIFF, or RAW file of your photo to an email and send it to:
If you have a physical photograph such as a film negative or a slide, you can also mail the photo along with a printed copy of the form to the museum's mailing address:
